Where boehmite is used
The same chemical identity can require very different particle engineering, purity and surface properties depending on end use.
Lithium-ion batteries
The highest-value modern application is ceramic coating of separators and edge coating of electrode sheets.
Separator coating
Boehmite is deposited on polymer separators to improve thermal dimensional stability and electrolyte wettability while maintaining a porous ion-transport pathway. Fine, controlled particles allow thinner coatings.
Electrode-edge coating
Edge coatings are used to reduce short-circuit risk associated with electrode burrs and local mechanical damage. Commercial suppliers explicitly market boehmite for this application.
Other industrial applications
Catalysts & catalyst carriers
Boehmite and pseudoboehmite are used as alumina precursors and in catalyst-support systems. High surface area/pore volume grades are common in this segment.
High-purity alumina precursor
Controlled aluminium oxyhydroxide can be calcined to alumina. Purity and impurity profile determine suitability for advanced ceramics and electronic uses.
Ceramics
Used in ceramic and coating systems requiring heat resistance, aluminium-oxide chemistry or controlled sintering behavior.
Polymers & flame-retardant systems
Selected grades are marketed as functional fillers in polymers and electrical/electronic components. Formulation-specific testing is required.
Porous membranes
Some manufacturers list boehmite for porous filter membranes where particle and surface properties are leveraged to build controlled structures.
Soft abrasives
Some industrial suppliers list boehmite as a soft abrasive. This is a smaller application than established alumina or ceria polishing markets and should be treated as grade-specific.
